How to Prepare an Outline
OUTLINES CAN TAKE A VARIETY OF FORMS, FROM INFORMAL TO FORMAL. USUALLY, OUTLINES ARE USED TO PLAN A DRAFT; HOWEVER, THEY CAN ALSO BE USEFUL AFTER DRAFTING TO SHOW ORGANIZATION, GAPS IN ARGUMENTS, MISPLACED AND EVEN MISSING SUPPORTING EVIDENCE OR ANALYSES. (OUTLINING AS PART OF THE REVISION STAGE OF WRITING IS MY PREFERENCE.)
PRIMARILY, HOWEVER, MOST OUTLINES FALL INTO ONE OF TWO MAIN CATEGORIES: TOPIC OR SENTENCE.
A TOPIC OUTLINE USES WORDS OR PHRASES TO IDENTIFY MAJOR POINTS (FIRST LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION) AND EVIDENCE (SECOND LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION) THAT SUPPORT A THESIS STATEMENT.
A SENTENCE OUTLINE USES TOPIC SENTENCES TO IDENTIFY MAJOR POINTS (FIRST LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION) AND COMPLETE SENTENCES TO INTRODUCE EVIDENCE (SECOND LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION) THAT SUPPORT A THESIS STATEMENT. THESE SENTENCES MAY BECOME PART OF A COMPLETED ESSAY DRAFT.
THE ATTACHED LINKS OFFER EXAMPLES OF TOPIC AND FULL-SENTENCE OUTLINES:

INSTRUCTIONS
Prepare a sentence outline that includes thesis statement and topic sentences to identify major points (first level of organization) and complete sentences to introduce evidence (second level of organization) that support a thesis statement. These sentences may become part of a completed essay draft.
Further levels of organization may be bullet point notes.
The more detailed your outline, the easier it will be to write the draft.
