Initial Post Activity and Writing Prompts
You will be provided the opportunity to apply principles from either Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to a situation. Please select one of the below two options for writing your initial post.
Initial Post Option 1: REBT
You will be applying the ABCDE approach from REBT to a situation in your life.
First, review the material in the textbook on the ABC approach from REBT
Second, think of an example in your life that you can apply the ABC approach to, and apply the approach to your situation. Please only self-disclose what you feel comfortable sharing with the class. Remember to also honor confidentiality and do not discuss your classmate’s posts with anyone outside of our class. If for any reason you would prefer not to self-disclose any personal information you may state that your post will be fictional, and you may pretend you are a fictional character of your choosing. You would then address the below points from the perspective of that fictional character.
Third, address the below prompts
Respond to the below prompts:
Describe the ABCDE approach. Support with references.
Describe a situation in your life (you will later apply the approach to this situation).
Applying the ABCDE approach to your situation. In other words, discuss each of the letters (A, B, C, D, E) as they can be applied to your situation.
TIP: Consider organizing your post with level one headings.
Initial Post Option 2: CT

First, review the material in the textbook on cognitive distortions from CBT.
Second, think of examples of cognitive distortions that you have observed. Please only self-disclose what you feel comfortable sharing with the class. Remember to also honor confidentiality and do not discuss your classmate’s posts with anyone outside of our class.
Third, address the below prompts:
Identify and describe three distorted cognitions and provide a situation or context based on your experiences where you have observed those distorted cognitions (in other words, provide examples of those three distorted cognitions). Support with reference/s.
Identify and discuss strategies that you would use to enable a client in this context to evaluate and subsequently modify each type of distortion. You may utilize your-self as the client or another individual (please do not list any personally identifiable information of other individuals). Support with reference/s
TIP: Consider organizing your post with level one headings.
Post Requirements
Requirements: 1 page
Initial and Response Post Requirements
Initial Post Writing Guidelines and Requirements:
Initial posts are like small 1-2 page papers depending on your writing style. First, write the post in a word document, address each question, spell check, and review your paper against the rubric. After you finalize your initial post, please do not submit it as a word document! Instead, create a new thread with your name and the title of the post in the subject line and then copy and paste your draft from the word document to the discussion board and click submit.
Your initial post is due by the end of the day on day 4 (Thursday at 11:59 p.m.).
Two sources are required for your initial post, one should be a professional source (e.g., journal article) other than the textbook, and your second source can either be the textbook or another professional source). For your initial discussion board post you only need to follow APA procedures related to in-text citations and your reference list.
Peer Response Writing Guidelines and Requirements:
Response posts should further the conversation in a meaningful way by contributing a new dimension or knowledge to the discussion. Postings should be thoughtful and make use of the week’s readings, information obtained from other sources, and/or ideas expressed by others in the class. Responses posts should be substantive, reflective, and evidence based as appropriate while demonstrating an in-depth understanding and/or application of relevant concepts to the discussion.
Two sources are required per each response post, one should be a professional source (e.g., journal article) other than the textbook, and your second source can either be the textbook or another professional source).
For your response discussion board posts you only need to follow APA procedures related to in-text citations and your reference list.
To receive full credit for your discussion board participation, you must respond to at least three individuals (peers and/or instructor) on three different days of the week prior to the end of day 6 (Saturday at 11:59 p.m.).
Please note that your peer responses can occur prior to your initial post. See the grading rubric for more information. In addition, responses should reference the peer’s or instructor’s post in some way.
Tips:
Avoid writing fluff to fill space. Make sure each word, phrase, and sentence you write has a purpose.
Proof read your work twice before submitting
Use your references/sources to support your points and arguments rather than merely paraphrasing information from the book. The goal is for you to share your own unique ideas while using professional sources to support those ideas.
Make sure to provide an in-text citation for all information taken from another source that is not your own idea.
Simply supplying direct quotations does not go far enough to advance discourse or provide evidence of learning beyond the knowledge and comprehension level. Direct quotes, if used, should be used sparingly, be short in length, and have a purpose. For example, a direct quote can be appropriate if using an author’s exact words is necessary to get a point across or add additional meaning that could only come from the author’s original words. However, as a general rule, if information can be paraphrased, it should be paraphrased rather than quoted directly.
Last, all though it may be temping to use the posts of your classmates as “templates” for how to write you own posts, have confidence in yourself and your writing. Let your word, thoughts, ideas, arguments, and organization come from you!
