Lindsay, the medical assistant assigned to Dr. Dean, is reviewing Mike Creel’s complex medical history. Mr. Creel suffers from Fibromyalgia, a widespread pain disorder affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Fibromyalgia can be debilitating, affecting a patient’s physical and mental health. Fibromyalgia frequently causes depression due to intense chronic pain and lack of normal body function. Mr. Creel also has Diabetes Mellitus Type 2. This disorder causes abnormally high blood sugars (glucose levels) when the body does not produce an adequate supply and/or respond to insulin normally. Mr. Creel requires insulin injections on a daily basis. Regulating insulin levels is important to maintain function of his pancreas and kidneys. Lindsay will review Mr. Creel’s lab results for appropriate blood glucose levels. It is necessary for Mr. Creel to rotate his insulin injection sites daily to avoid damage to his skin and soft tissues. Lindsay will also make sure Mr. Creel has regular eye exams scheduled, as the fluctuation in his blood sugars can cause permanent eye damage if not monitored.
